Hi Gomer,

Singer oil is safe, it will stop the oxidation but it will not polish. If the rust is not that bad the oil should do the job. Otherwise, polishing is required. If the tuners which are probably chrome finished, Gorgomyte will work or use Brasso for Silver or Chrome.

Thanks for helping me out via our Live Chat in WA. I sought you there as I know you’re the expert when it comes to proper care and maintenance of electric guitars. And you’re right, the stains that I noticed are “rust”. The tuners are starting to rust, maybe because of air humidity and dust.

What I’m doing now is cleaning the parts with a piece of cloth and damped with Singer oil (sewing machine oil). Is that safe for those parts? Then, if it doesn’t clean the rust, I will try that one you are recommending (Gorgomyte).

Very informative post, My son plays guitar and I found your post interesting. I don't know anything about caring for a fretboard, but I hear my son talk about everything he does to maintain his guitars and I will definitely recommend this article/site to him for review.

Hi Leon,

Dirt and gunk accumulated on the sides of your fret wire will kill sustain. Protective coating on new nickel silver fret wires kill sustain. Gorgomyte will clean, polish the fret wire, and it also cleans and conditions the fretboard. There is no other product out there that will do those multiple jobs In a single shot.

You will be surprised by the restored sustain and increased playability of your guitar.

Hi Den, thanks for the enthusiastic and detailed article. Now I understand how important this product is with respect to caring for my instrument.

I'd be interested if treating your guitar with this product results in a perceptible difference in the sound when it's played. Can you share perspective on that?

Nice! My dad, brother, and my brother-in-law ALL play guitar… in fact they have weekly jam sessions… I will have to mention this product to them. I didn’t realize the importance of cleaning the fretboard, but you made perfect sense, I imagine that they can get pretty dingy. I will share this info with them, thanks!

Yes it rocks. I love this product. I used to use a fret polish, a fretboard cleaner and conditioner. Now only one product will do the job.
