Best Way To Learn To Play the Guitar

Updated September 7, 2019 By Den 24 Comments

I am a self-taught guitarist. I still remember when I have to ask my friends to teach me, and it was frustrating because they are players but not teachers. So what is the best way to learn to play the guitar?

Guitar tutors are very expensive. Learning online is the best option because you can do it anytime and from the comfort of your home. There are free youtube videos teaching guitar lessons, but they are just snippets of training. There is no continuity.  Most of them are poorly recorded. Reading tabs can help you but to a very limited degree when nobody is really teaching you how to do it.

There is a website that can really make you a guitar player you want to be. It is called JamPlay. Their courses are well structured, and they have the best guitar instructors in the world. Even Steve Stevens, the “Top Gun” anthem guitarist is one of the instructors there.

They can teach you from absolute beginner level to advanced level. They can even teach you to play a particular song. Different genres, styles, and techniques. Be it acoustic or electric guitar. All lessons are recorded in high-resolution multi-angled cameras.

They have a system to check your progress unlike learning from a DVD or Video when nobody is checking on your progress.  All songs are fully licensed by the artists and songwriters. You are actually helping your favorite band by joining JamPlay.

Even if you haven’t touched a guitar yet or you are an advanced player trying to improve your skills.  Age, gender or educational background doesn’t matter. This website will make you the guitar player you want to be.

The fun part is that the price of the  courses are very much reasonable any person can afford it. So sign up now and get the best of their seven-day free trial offer.

Guitar tutors are SUPER expensive these days! Back when I started to learn it was only $12 a lesson – but we’re talking the 80’s, so times have changed.

Having a proper plan in place and the right approach to learning guitar is totally the right way to go. I think JamPlay is a good way to learn guitar and thanks for the discount codes!

      Hi Kegan,

Guitar tutors are super expensive I must agree. That is why JamPlay is a very good place for guitar lessons. Cheaper and you learn from your home.

I toyed with the idea of playing a guitar after seeing my wife’s uncles perform a few songs for us at our wedding a few years ago. One of her uncles is in the famous UK band UB40.

I didn’t feel confident that I could learn and soon lost the motivation. After reading your post I can see that it would be possible to pick it up again. How long would it take me to learn to a decent level if I were to dedicate a few hours every weekend?

      Hi Jay,

It will depend on how motivated you are. I have seen some of my students did not take time to advance because they are passionate about learning how to play.

    Hey Den!

I wanted to offer some comments on your post for JamPlay. I am learning guitar myself so this was great to read and I can definitely relate to the issues your spoke about. This is definitely true of friends being guitar players not teachers! Overall the content is great, I was curious if you use JamPlay (I’m guessing you do) and how has your progress come along? Has it helped you progress pretty quickly?

      Hi Aaron,

I use to do guitar lessons but I stopped and recommended JamPlay to my students. It is more cost effective to them and the training is more structured than what I can teach them. They are happy because they can do it anytime they want in the comfort of their home. I took JamPlay lessons and my progress is faster.

      Thanks for the comments,

Thanks for the post! It seems JamPlay is a very good website to learn to play guitar. Question: is there a recommended style of guitar you recommend for learning? A lot of my friends who played in high school recommended acoustic but I wanted to know your thoughts. I got an electric guitar for Christmas a while back, but I’m not sure if it’s the best for learning.

      Hi Bobby,

JamPlay is a very good website to learn to play guitar. Learning to play on an electric guitar is much easier than on an acoustic guitar because of string tension. It is painful to learn on an acoustic. Please check my post What is the Best Beginner Guitar for more information about this subject.

I’ve personally tried to learn guitar by myself by trying to read tabs, but It is not ideal long term. Having an experienced teacher is still the best, and now with so many on line options, like JamPlay which you recommend, it is definitely easier than trying to do it yourself. I am planning to enroll now as I can see the benefits form these structured training they offered.

    Hi Den,

Great Post! I used to play some guitar when I was younger and I loved it, but as most things go, I got busy and I forgot how to play even the simplest things. I remember I used to be able to read both sheet music and tabs. Does JamPlay offer lessons on both, or just one or the other?

      Hi Allison,

JamPlay guitar lessons is thru video training as well as interactive tabs. The video lessons utilizes HD cameras and it is recorded in multiple angles. The interactive tabs they provide is actually a tab and sheet music software with audio playback. It is cool as you can play along with the software and use it as a backing track. You can also print the sheet music and tabs if you want.

      Thanks for the comments,

      Den

    Hey, Den!

I didn’t know this website you suggested. Just checked, and it looks great! It’s actually paramount when you’re starting out to have this kind of help to stay motivated.

I remember when I was first starting out, I had a few classes with a professional, but my main source of knowledge was YouTube and trying to play along with the songs (Maybe I’m also a bit self-taught as well! lol)…

But in fact, it would certainly have helped if I had found this platform before at that time. My progress would have been much higher in a short period. Now I am really thinking about taking advance lessons in JamPlay.

I strongly recommend every newbie attempting to learn guitar to use this platform, it’s really great! Thanks for the good info man, take care!

I always wanted to play the guitar when I was a teenager but as you mentioned guitar tutors are very expensive and I never started because of that…A friend of mine started to teach me but he had no free time so I end up without learning how to play the guitar. The site that you talk about seems very good indeed, I might give it a shot! JamPlay looks promising.

    Thank you for the info!

One thing I enjoyed the most when I started out was playing along to my favourite songs. I’d research and find the tabs for Guitar Pro and I’d learn just by playing along. I would like to check that JamPlay that you recommend.

It never started out perfect but overtime I was able to keep up with the original tempo and just jam along. That was great since learning all the traditional “beginner” songs were so boring I was close to giving up there and then. Fun is half the battle don’t you think?

      Hi Ryan,

I did try learning with Guitar Pro but I wish I started right away with JamPlay. Their training is really structured and they have great instructors. You will have a lesser chance of having bad playing habits if you learn thru an instructor. If you are self taught those bad habits will be hard to correct over time.

      Thanks for the comments,

    Hi Den,

I never heard of JamPlay; but it sounds like it can be of great help to people who want to learn to play guitar.

I play guitar; but I simply chord (very simply) Lol. It enables me to sing my own songs at church. (I am a singer/songwriter) I am the song leader at my church. And while I’m thankful that I can do what I can; I sure would like to learn to play better. I always admired people who could pick.

I wrote your site down. I will come back to check it out again.
