To stop guitar hum is not that complicated as most people think. As it is an annoying issue on an electric guitar, it is an advantage if you can fix it yourself. Old guitar pickups are mostly single coils. When it was discovered that single coil pickups produce a hum even on a low gain setting, the humbucker pickups were invented. They even make some humbucker pickups in single coil size.
Even though you are using a humbucker pickup there is still a chance that the guitar will hum on high gain settings. This is corrected by using all of these three methods.
- Avoiding unnecessary ground loops. Unnecessary ground loops will not help in shielding the electronics of the guitar.
- Using star grounding. Star grounding means you must have a common grounding point instead of grounding any component anywhere.
- Using proper shielding materials. Shielding paint is by far more effective than shielding foils. It is because you can cover the whole electronics cavity better than the shielding foil. It also looks more professional compared to shielding foils.
